Georg Baresch , Latinized Georgius Barschius, Jiří Bareš in Czech, (1585 in Synkov near Častolovice; died 1662 was a Bohemian scholar, alchemist and lawyer in Prague, the first clearly documented owner of the Voynich manuscript.
Medieval European alchemist and antique collector from Prague, and the earliest confirmed owner of the Voynich Manuscript, about which he was in correspondence with Athanasius Kircher in the late 1630s, having owned the Manuscript for some time.
Baresch continued to work unsuccessfully with the decipherment and bequeathed the Voynich manuscript with other bequests to his friend Marci on his death, who left the manuscript to Kircher in Rome, as he was not interested in its decipherment.
